I have seen over and over again [in my own life and for my private coaching clients] that striving for inner peace doesn’t have to mean making drastic changes, but that you can create a true shift by adopting a few simple steps.
The “simple steps” approach [or what I like to call a happy medium] gets greats results and is the best place to start when we’re creating sustainable habits that relieve stress and help us to feel calm and at ease on our journey to inner peace. Each of these tips requires minimal time and effort and still reaps incredibly peaceful results so you can start feeling more zen, right away – choose a couple and try them today!
Ask yourself what’s in YOUR power to control, then go ahead and change it. You cannot control others’ response or behaviour so you might as well focus on yourself.
Practice the 5 X 5 rule. Tell yourself that you won’t spend more than 5 minutes worrying about something stressful when it won’t matter in 5 years. This will help you get clear on what’s important to you and what’s not.
Retrain your mind to process and accept life just as it is, rather than imposing your expectations on how you think it should be. Spend a week monitoring your expectations of yourself and others and realise the extent to which “expectations” dominate your life.
Breathe. Set a reminder on your phone or computer to take 5 deep breaths in the morning, at noon and at night. Pausing for a moment at the top of your inhale and making your exhale as long and slow as possible.
Focus on something small. When you feel stress creep in and inner peace seep out, come into the present moment by focusing on something beautiful that is in your immediate environment for one minute – maybe it’s a photo you love, a favourite piece of jewellery, or a beautiful view.
Observe your inner critic. When you notice you’re criticising yourself - in your mind or in front of others - observe your thoughts and stop it while you’re in the process of catching it.
Switch off. Switch your phone to airplane mode at 9pm and leave it outside the bedroom if you can. Make it a routine.
Stretch. Ease into your body by doing a few gentle stretches either seated or standing when you’re on the phone.
Envision. When you wash your hands, envision any stress or negativity being washed down the plug hole. Apply this to any mundane task.
While you’re sitting at your desk, take your shoes off and feel the floor or earth under your feet for instant grounding.
